Yep, it’s a real thing. I have recently had a couple of people ask me what to do to gain weight.  Unlike a big part of my clientele and myself, looking to lose weight, there are those that can’t seem to add an ounce no matter what they eat. Lucky them, I can’t smell bread without adding 3 ounces, put a slice in my mouth and that’s another 10. Don’t even get me started on fries or meats..sigh

There has been a lot of study on hardgainers  and here are a few explanations:

The one that most studies agree with is our genetic make up. Genes have been shown to determine the weight one has as an adult. The argument for this is, if as a child you had many fat cells and bacteria that helps in the absorption of fat (comes down to bacteria!), then as an adult, you will easily gain weight. The reverse is also true, if you were a skinny child, it will be harder to be a plus size adult.

Another study showed that your body sets an ideal weight. If that ideal is reached, the body will find a way to spend extra calories consumed.

Secondly, skinny people are more active. Not gym active, they just can’t sit still. This is known as NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis). This means that, they fidget more, choose standing, walking, pacing up and down than  being inactive  or sitting for long hours. So if you were to lose weight, this is perfect place to start.
